In fact the blue whale is likely the largest animal that ever lived on earth, exceeding the size of the largest known dinosaurs. Blue whales can grow to over 100 feet, and weigh over 150 tons. The largest fish is the whale shark at 15 - 18 m (50-60 ft.) in length, and weighing over 10 tons. The largest freshwater fish is the white sturgeon, with specimens recorded in excess of 600 pounds. Giant squid are the largest cephalopod (octopus, cuttlefish, squid) and the largest mollusk. The largest recorded giant squid was 59 feet long. The average size of the giant squid is 20 to 43 feet long, and between 110 and 660 pounds.

Recent studies have shown that dolphins are each given distinctive names. Dolphins are sociable, friendly, and very intelligent.

Sharks are pre-historic and swam the oceans during the dinosaur era.

Did You Know? Most trout live in freshwater, and are closely related to the salmon family. Carp are a long living freshwater fish. They are bony fish, but edible. Angelfish give birth to developed fish, not eggs. Their pectoral fins spread like wings. The most brightly colored fish, like the emperor fish, live in warm tropical waters.

Did You Know? A snail is a mollusk, and can hide completely inside its shell. There are marine and freshwater snails. A clam is also a mollusk. Some clams bury themselves in sand or mud. Ocean clams are very large. Octopus is another species of mollusk. Aside from their 8 arms octopus have large heads and keen eyes.
