| What
were the largest dinosaurs on earth? What were the tallest dinosaurs on
earth? What was the largest flying dinosaur? What was the heaviest dinosaur? |
| Dinosaur Superlatives |
| The
largest dinosaur is the Argentinosaurus at 115-130 ft. long (35-40 m),
and weighing 80-100 tons. There are several dinosaurs that were over 100 ft. long, and some individuals may have been as large as the Argentinosaurus, and are yet undiscovered. The other giant dinosaurs are the Paralititan, Seismosaurus, Andesaurus, Bruhathkayosaurus, Argyrosaurus, and Giraffatitan. The tallest dinosaurs were brachiosaurid sauropods. These sauropods are among the largest land animals ever discovered, and include the Sauroposeidon at 60 ft. tall, and 60 tons, and the Brachiosaurus, at 40 feet tall and 80 tons, and the Ultrasauros at 100 ft. long and 80 tons. The biggest carnivorous dinosaurs were the Giganotosaurus at 47 ft. (14m), and weighing 8 tons. The Tyrannosaurus Rex was the second largest dinosaur carnivore at 50 ft. long and 6 tons. The largest Pterosaur or flying reptile was the Quetzalcoatlus with a wingspan of 36 ft. (11m). The smallest dinosaur is a theropod called Microraptor found recently in China. The Microraptor dinosaur is about 16 inches (40 cm) long and may be an adult. |

Did You Know? Dinosaurs are a group of extinct lizards, who now exist only in fossil form. Dinosaurs are terrestrial (land) reptiles of immense size, but with little brains. |

| Dinosaurs became extinct about 65 million years ago, about the same time as a giant asteroid collided with Earth, in the Yucatan peninsula, off the coast of Mexico. |

| Sky | Pterosaur | Jurassic |
| Did You Know? The Pterosaur is an extinct order of flying reptiles, which included the Pterodactyl from the Lower Jurassic to late Mesozoic. |
![]() ![]() |
Fossilized remains found in strata reveal that the flying mechanism of a Pterodactyl was a large membrane between the body, and a greatly developed fourth digit. |
| Land | Brachiosaurus | Late Jurassic |
| Did You Know? A Brachiosaur is a member of the Brachiosaurus, a genus of huge dinosaurs of the Late Jurassic. |
![]() ![]() |
The Brachiosaurus was one of the most massive of all dinosaurs, and one of the heaviest animals ever to live on land, weighing up to 100 tons. |
| Land | Gallimimus | Late Cretaceous |
| Did You Know? The Gallimimus is an ornithomimosaur, and is known as the ostrich dinosaur. Their Geologic Age is Late Cretaceous. |
![]() ![]() |
The Gallimimus was among the fastest, and most agile of all the dinosaurs, and was capable of reaching racehorse speeds. |
| Land | Parasaurolophus | Late Cretaceous |
| Did You Know? The Parasaurolophus is a typically large and heavy-bodied duckbill dinosaur. Their Geologic Age is Late Cretaceous. |
![]() ![]() |
The Parasaurolophus had a spectacular crest jutting backward from the skull. The crest design may have been an echo chamber producing loud, deep bellows. |
| Land | Allosaurus | Early Cretaceous |
| Did You Know? The Allosaurus is a meat-eater who lived tens of millions of years before Tyrannosaurus. Their Age is Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous. |
![]() ![]() |
The Allosaurus had powerful hind limbs, and small forelimbs with 3-fingered hands. Their hands were tipped with razor-sharp claws, and their serrated teeth were knifelike. |
| Land | Tyrannosaurus | Late Cretaceous |
| Did You Know? The Tyrannosaurus is the most famous of all dinosaurs, and is one of the largest, and most powerful of all the carnosaurs, growing up to 40 feet long and weighing 8 tons. |
![]() ![]() |
The Tyrannosaurus was a tremendously strong hunter, with extraordinarily powerful jaws, equipped with serrated teeth, each up to 7 inches long. Their Age is Late Cretaceous. |
| Land | Triceratops | Late Cretaceous |
| Did You Know? The Triceratops was the largest, and heaviest, horned dinosaur. Triceratops means three-horned face. |
![]() ![]() |
They grew up to 30 feet and weighed 6 tons. Their sharp horns were up to 4 feet long, making it quite capable of defending itself. |
| Sea | Plesiosaur | Mesozoic |
| Did You Know? Plesiosaur was a Mesozoic ocean marine reptile, of the suborder Plesiosauria, of the order Sauropterygia. |
![]() |
The Plesiosaur grew to 40 feet in length, and swam with four large paddle-like limbs. Their Geologic Age is Mesozoic. |
